There is a large amount in the bond issue, $230 million, that isn’t really detailed. Why aren’t there more specifics, and how will I know the money will be spent for the right things?

First, this bond will have a citizens’ oversight committee that monitors the projects and makes recommendations to the school board on expenditures, ensuring the citizens wishes are carried out as promised. The projects are not specified to allow the district to address the most urgent needs first, and with the average age of the buildings over 70 years, it would be impossible to identify all maintenance needs today. This bond issue will serve OKCPS not just today, but for the next 15 years or so. Undoubtedly, there will be an air conditions system and other unforeseen specific needs that have to be addressed. It would be a mistake not to have these funds available. This is the best way to protect our community’s investment and ensure a quality infrastructure for the future.

Why is the district investing in athletics when their academic performance is not where it should be?

Quite simply, studies show that students engaged in athletics and other extracurricular activities are more likely to stay in school, and they perform better in the classroom. Our kids deserve to have the same opportunities as kids in the suburbs to participate in sports.
